Breath of Fire III
Set far after the events of Breath of Fire 2, we see the return of the Goddess Myria. The Dragon Clan, or the Brood are thought to be a race long gone, purged by the Guardians a few generations prior, after the events of Breath of Fire 2.
We see the familiar repeats of the series in Ryu and Nina, along with the many races of this universe.
BoF3 is an excellent continuation of the lore of this world, and wraps up a lot of questions posed by the first two games. A delightful cast of 5 playable characters outside Ryu. You can only have two in your party at once, not including Ryu. I loved them all so it was really hard to pick who to bring with me most times.
The Master system is introduced here, allowing you to either create powerhouses by aligning masters with your characters personal strengths, or try to break them out of their mold. For example I made one of the strong powerhouses apprentice under a magic master, to get some SP boosts so he would have a little more utility.
Music was, overall, fine. There were a few banging tracks, like the second world theme.
The best aspect this game has going for it is pacing. It’s a shorter game, about 35 hours, and it doesn’t have any dull moments. There aren’t any bloating side quests or filler content. The battle system is simple, yet effective and fun. The world isn’t that large but it serves its purpose. As a sidenote, this game has some of the best aging of PS1 era graphics by far.
The cons are small, but annoying. The removal of the “warp” spell means you’re going to do a lot of walking. A lot of walking. The algorithm for automatically sorting items is horrible. You’re better off doing it manually. I also feel they could have allowed four party members total and just balanced the game differently.
Overall I’d say it was a solid
