Dead Cells

Sometimes a game just doesn’t jive with you. It’s sad when it happens but you have to accept it. 3

Dead Cells is a metrodvania rogue-like with fast paced action combat and beautiful pixel art graphics.

While I completely loved the combat, and enjoyed the difficulty curve, Dead Cells felt like it was missing something for me. The game starts with absolutely no context. A blob drops from a pipe in the ceiling and takes over a headless corpse. Then it starts. No explanation of why there’s this squishy green blob that can take over a lifeless body, or why I’m traversing through this dungeon. There are some things hidden throughout that you can investigate. From it I’ve gathered something called the “malaise” (a sickness of sorts) has ravaged this dungeon prison, in what I think is a castle. Yeah that’s all I got after almost 10 hours of playing.

Unfortunately without any context, story, or direction… I just wasn’t hooked. I was super hyped to play this, but it’s just not for me.

If you’re looking for a game super heavy on gameplay and light on the reading, however, go ahead and give this a shot!
